The Alpaca Field Manual by Norman Evans D.V. M. is a complete guide to day-to-day and emergency alpaca care. There is excellent information on proper nutrition as well as other preventative health care practices. It is our go-to guide for quick info when something goes wrong. The Chapter tabs along the right hand edge allow you to flip right to the section you need which is particularly useful in a crisis situation.
Dr. Evans has gathered together insight from four experienced camelid veterinarians in order to offer a well-rounded guide. Of particular interest to us was the section on Complementary Therapies by Dr. Ed Sheaffer and Dr. Tom Cameron. This section offers a balanced perspective on holistic herd management. There are options for therapies that can be used in conjunction with conventional vaccines to decrease the possibility of negative side effects. They also discuss options to consider as alternatives to conventional vaccines.
Jessica attended a workshop by Dr. Pat Long on the subject of herd health management and was extremely impressed by his extensive knowledge and down-to-earth personality. He offers insight on many topics in the Manual. Dr. Stephen Hull Ph.D. is a well known lecturer in the camelid industry and offers his expert opinion on drug dosing and winter nutrition needs.
The Alpaca Field Manual has a particularly extensive chapter on nutrition. With input from Dr. Evans, Dr. Long and Dr. Hull, it offers an in-depth look at all aspects of alpaca nutrition.
If we had to choose only one alpaca book to have on our shelf at White Pines Alpaca Ranch, this is definitely the one we would choose.
If so, please share your thoughts and opinions with others. Your insight and experiences may jump-start ideas or resolve existing issues for all of us.
Or you may help the alpaca enthusiast who is debating taking the plunge and becoming an owner.
